There are many birthday traditions we all follow when having a childs birthday party in Perth. These include sending cards, gift giving and eating birthday cake.

What you may not know is other countries have their own unique traditions also. Just for fun we have put a list of these together. You may fancy using some at your childs next birthday party in Perth!

Check out some of these global birthday customs, starting with our very own tradition;

Australia – Kids eat fairy bread, which as you may know, is simply bread with butter and sprinkles on top. A hit at any kids birthday party!

Austria – In certain parts of Austria, birthdays are celebrated the night before the actual birthday.

Argentina – Birthdays in Argentina are mainly celebrated with eating sandwiches and sweet pastries called sandwiches de miga and masas. Kids also get a tug on their earlobe for every year old they are.

Brazil – The child is given the first piece of cake but they don’t eat it themselves. They give it to the most important person in their lives, usually their mum or dad.

Canada – The person celebrating their birthday has their nose greased with butter by their friends and family to help fend off bad luck.

Germany – In Germany it is considered bad luck to wish someone happy birthday on any other day other than their actual birthday.

Ghana – Kids are woken on the morning of their birthdays to eat fried sweet potato patty’s called “oto.”

India – After singing a birthday song the person who’s birthday it is will cut a small piece of cake and feed it to all the guests. They usually start with their closest family members such as mum, dad and siblings. After everyone has had a bite the guests will then take turns feeding the cake to the birthday boy or girl.

Israel – In Israel the birthday child will wear a crown of flowers and leaves while sitting on a chair and being raised the same number of times as their age. On a childs 3rd birthday they will have their very first haircut.

Jamaica – Here’s a fun and messy tradition, Jamaicans will throw flour at you on your birthday in what they call antiquing. Usually done when you are off guard!

Mexico – Kids birthday parties are celebrated with a piñata filled with lollies. People take turns to hit the piñata until it breaks open spilling all the sweets.

Nigeria – As a long standing tradition, a person’s 1st, 10th and 15th birthdays are considered the most important and are celebrated with large parties.

Any of the above traditions can be incorporated into your childs birthday celebration here in Perth. What’s more difficult is deciding what to do for the actual party. Well that’s where we come in!
