Video gaming is great fun for children. Most of the time it is a safe and positive environment. However, there can be instances where cyberbullying may occur.

Online gamers have the ability to talk to other users through the use of a microphone to chat. Whilst this should be used to encourage teamwork, build friendships and improve the gaming experience, some players take advantage of this technology and use it to abuse players either verbally or through messages.

As parents you can help prevent cyberbullying of your child while they play video games by doing the following;

  • – Playing the game with your child and observing the game to fully understand how it works and exactly what your child is exposed to
  • – Checking in periodically with your child, asking them who is online and playing the game with them
  • – Knowing which gaming communities your child uses while gaming and their security risks which can be found online
  • – Setting the privacy and security settings for their games
  • – Teaching children about safe online behavior, such as not sharing personal information like emails, phone numbers, addresses and passwords

There are also things that your child can do if they are cyberbullied or see it happen to others whilst gaming;

  • – Asking the player who is doing the bullying to stop
  • – Blocking the player who is bullying from the game and unfriending them from gaming communities
  • – Reporting the player who is bullying to the game platform or community
  • – Taking a break from playing the game to let the situation die down
  • – Telling their parents or guardian and getting support from them
