School holidays, usually mean that kids spend a lot of time at home and need an abundance of activities to keep them busy without the added cost! Last month we summed up some of the out-of-the-house activities you can do these school holidays in Perth. Today we are giving you some ideas on how to keep the kids busy and not bored at home during the holidays as well.

Cooking

This is something that you probably already do yourself, so why not get your kids involved in it as well? Get them to help you with the things you’re making or even look up an easy kids recipe. For example, these are some super easy cookies, which the kids will no doubt enjoy making from scratch.

They’ll love playing with all the ingredients, especially if the ingredients are colourful! Plus you can get them even more excited and make the cookies all different shapes and sizes using cookie cutters. It’ll no doubt keep them busy for a while and help you keep an eye on them whilst you cook yourself some nice food as well.

Another idea is to play a whole restaurant night out of it, much like when kids play ‘the shop’ game. You could help them set up the dinner table and get other family members to call up and book a reservation. They can write up a menu and then, with your help, create it. The kids will love the make-believe and you’ll get some extra hands to help you cook as well!

Craft

There are hundreds of craft projects for all ages that your kids could do. Take a look at this list for instance; you could make paper mache bowls, jewellery or even a boomerang! Find a project that your child would be interested in and then use household materials you already have to help bring the project to life!

Cover the area with newspaper where the project will occur so that it is easier to clean up later, and get out the glitter, paint and any other craft supplies you might have. They’ll love getting creative and it’s sure to take up quite a bit of their time.

Making A Movie

This is a bit more specific to those kids who can already use technology and have access to things like a computer and camera (or even a phone). But in this day and age, with tech-savvy kids, videos going viral every day and YouTube being called the new kids TV, they are no doubt exposed to it and would enjoy having their own go at making a video.

Whether that’s a short film about a project they are working on or a video with their friends, let them film the whole thing by themselves and then allow them to try edit it too. They’ll have a fun time exploring more of the technology that surrounds them and it’s sure to create some fun family films to look back on.

Gardening

Find a spare patch in your garden or if you don’t have much room build a little herb stand on your balcony or porch and help your kids plant some herbs and plants. They’ll enjoy working with nature and learning about how things can grow, plus they can then use these herbs to cook with as well! It’ll give them some responsibility to remember to water the plants and look after them in order to see them grow as well.

Hosting A Sleepover

Getting your child’s friends together will always keep them busy. Invite them over for a play night, have some movies, games and snacks ready and you’re good to go. You can get them to play some board games or even part-take in some of the craft ideas above.

If you wanted to, you could even outsource some entertainment, such as Game Vault for example, and make a party out of it! Your kids will remember it, enjoy it and you’ll get a couple of kid free hours, as Game Vault’s professional gaming coaches will ensure they are fully engaged and entertained for the entire session!

Follow some of these tips and the last couple of weeks of the school holidays will no doubt fly by super fast. You won’t need to worry about them not having enough to do as they’ll be kept busy enjoying themselves the entire time!
