Some kids can get overwhelmed at birthday parties.

At first it may seem that your child is just shy when they cried or clung to you as you arrived at a party. However, it’s not always just shyness. Some children get overwhelmed at parties for various reasons including, crowds, attention, noise, bright lights, etc.

For some kids, becoming overwhelmed can lead to meltdowns or complete shut down, refusing to move or participate.

These are tough moments that can cause embarrassment and worry because you don’t know how to best help your child. After all, you want them to enjoy going to a friends birthday party.

Helping your child through this overwhelm is possible with a few simple strategies;

1) Try to arrive at parties early before most of the other guests. Being one of the first to arrive will give your child a chance to get comfortable with their surroundings and environment. This way they can slowly adjust as people enter the room instead of being bombarded all at once

2) Use a weighted lap pad during parties to help keep your child calm

3) Let them know that you and the host are there to support them and they can approach you or the host at any time

4) Pack a small bag with some of the supportive items they may need such as a hat, headphones or sunglasses

5) Teach them calming breathing techniques that they can utilise should they become overwhelmed
